Attend my office hours once this week, or make an appointment for Mon, Tue or Wed (HFA-233). Write a fifth species counterpoint above Fux's D minor cantus firmus (DFEDGFAGFED), and another below. Bring it to our meeting, and I will help you prepare for the exam on 9/28
9/21 18th c. counterpoint review
9/28 Exam #1 (counterpoint) then to Prof. Ivy for remainder of semester.

For students finishing tonal harmony with Prof. Ivy:
Introduction. Writing a Cantus Firmus, First and Second Species
Reading for 10/5: Study the handouts, read pp. 1-52 in the Schoenberg, pp. 34-46 in Owen, and the Larson text on eReserves
Homework for 10/5: Write four cantus firmi (2 in major, 2 in minor). Write first species counterpoints to the cantus firmi given in class.

10/5 Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth species
Reading for 10/12: Read pp. 27-32 and 46-47 in the Owen and pp. 53-70 in the Schoenberg
HW for 10/12: Write two of each (one above CF, one below CF): second, third and fourth species counterpoint to the cantus firmi given in class (you choose major or minor).
Write four counterpoints in 5th species (one above and one below the major CF, one above and one below the minor CF)
Write the intervals between the two voices in Lassus's "Santcei Mei," and be able to sing both parts.

10/12 Fifth Species Review, Intro to 18th c. counterpoint
Homework for 10/19: Read Chapter 3 "The Answer" of the Gedalge text, pg. 174-184 in the Kennan text, and pg. 192-199 in the Benjamin text
10/1918th c. counterpoint (answers, countersubjects, middle entries)
Homework for 10/26: Choose 4 subjects from WTC books I and/or II that need tonal answers, and write answers (2 major and 2 minor). Choose ONE fugue from WTC book 1 or 2 and label the subject, answer, countersubject, the end of the exposition, and any middle entries (including their keys). Read Kennan pg. 220-235 and Benjamin chapters 10 and 11 (you've read most of chapter 10 already).
10/26 18th c. counterpoint review. 16th c. counterpoint review. It is recommended that you make an appointment to meet with me out of class that I may check your work for fixable mistakes (e.g., consistent dissonant leaps, dissonant preparations to a suspension figure, etc.)
